Radio station business plan
A radio station business plan should essentially incorporate the following contents -
1. Should begin with a statement of purpose. You purpose could be to attract investors, apply for a license or to serve as personal references. You should ideally have different radio station business plans for different purposes.
For instance, the purpose of a potential investor would be to know about the projected return and whether it would be safe to invest in the proposal while the purpose of the licensing authority would be to assess whether you possess the required execution capabilities.
2. The plan should state clearly these two things -
a) The present stage of development of your radio station.
b) The proposed time for going ‘on-air’ .
3. The plan should identify clear time lines or schedule for completion of all activities.
4. Next, the plan should clearly identify all sources of income and expenses. It should then explain the expected profitability of the radio station business.
6. The business plan should study the viability from several angles like: technical, financial, human resource, promotional and others
7. The business plan should clearly spell the target audience demographic details like population size, age group, sex ratio and other typical data about tastes and preferences of the audience.
8. Ideally a business plan should also include‘sensitivity’ or a ‘what-if’ analysis which should discuss the second line of strategies, should the primary plan fail in delivering the desired outcomes.
9. The radio station business plan should provide the regulators and investors with easy methods to cross check the internal working, record keeping and legal compliances. The business plan should provide them with easy follow up methods into these.
Conclusion
This is the preliminary list of things that must be included in your radio station business plan. The list would be further populated by the specific requirements of each case. The thumb rule here is that your business plan should have ease of understanding without failing to provide all necessary data.
To conclude, you cannot apply a ‘one size fits all’ kind of thing to radio station business plans. Each business plan with be entirely different from the others. No one else can get into your shoes to draft your business plan. Hence it is never advisable to buy a ready made radio station business plan.
You should rather understand the basic first and then make your own radio station business plan. This exercise is quite easy to do if understood properly and it also ensures that you get to know the in’s & out’s of the business before spending valuable resources into this.
